ABOUT THE UNIT | ||
![]() Introduction The Auxiliary Police Unit of New York City was created in 1950 by the State of New York. We have over 100 Auxiliary Police officers in the 61st pct alone, and are still growing. We have a number of units within the Auxiliary Section, they are listed below. Our Units - Foot Patrol - Police Car / Van patrol - Rescue Truck - Bike Unit Members are assigned to units based on rank, time with the unit and experience. What We Do Auxiliary Police provide extra eyes and ears for the police department. We are trained to observe and report conditions requiring the services of the regular police officers. Wherever possible, we assist in non-enforcement and non-hazardous duties. The following are areas in which the Auxiliary Police have assisted in the past: A. Additional uniform presence at: - parks, playgrounds, pools - street fairs, flea markets, block parties - shopping areas - subway entrances and exits - school/church crossings B. Assist with vehicular / pedestrian traffic at: - parades - marathons - concerts - intersections with broken traffic lights - accident scenes - fire scenes C. Assist in Precinct Identification Programs: - Combat Auto Theft Program - Bicycle ID Program - Operation ID Program - Kid Care Program - VIN Etching Program |
